Spaces of Power: Mapping Authority in Late Imperial China

Quinn Javers is an assistant professor of history. His project, which involves archival research in China, was awarded a 2016-17 ISS Individual Research Grant. He provided this update in May 2018.

How did this project come about? What inspired it?

The project is an outgrowth of earlier research conducted at the Sichuan Provincial Archive in Chengdu, PRC.

How has it progressed since you received an ISS Individual Research Grant?

The project is developing well.

What notable or surprising findings can you share at this point?

I found some really funny, interesting and failed attempts by the British to map control over their leasehold in Weihaiwei.

What is the next step?

Finish writing the article based on archival research funded by the grant.
