Sylla's research focus is on the financial history of the U.S. in comparative contexts.  Among his books are The American Capital Market, 1846-1914The State, the Financial System, and Economic Modernization; A History of Interest RatesFounding Choices:  American Economic Policy in the 1790s; and Genealogy of American Finance.  Past president of the Economic History Association and of the Business History Conference (2011 Lifetime Achievement Award), he has served as editor of the Journal of Economic History and is currently chairman of the trustees of the Museum of American Finance.
